Weekly photo challenge – Wall

Stone wall at Moorehall

Stone wall at Moorehall

I have already blogged about Moorehall, an amazing ruin near Lough Cara in County Mayo (https://murtaghwrite.wordpress.com/2015/02/20/moorehall-a-poem/ and  https://murtaghsmeadow.wordpress.com/2015/03/05/moorehall/). But I had to post yet another photo of this amazing place in response to this week’s photo challenge – Wall (https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_photo_challenge/wall/). The photograph above is of wall at the back of the main ruin of Moorehall itself, in the courtyard. This was once the wall of the turf house. Other buildings in the courthouse included store house, wood house, brew house and a hen house. More information can be seen at http://www.oreillydesign.com/moorehall/housmain.html

  1. The wall of a thousand stories… So, did they store turf in such a cold, damp but light building for use around the estate? Didn’t realise they existed.

    1. The turf would have been well dried before storing. I expect that it just the turf for the house stored here – there is also a turf and coal room on the ground floor of the building.
