Small Tortoiseshell butterfly

Well spring is well under way here in the west of Ireland and today I saw my first butterfly – not exactly fresh, in that this Little Tortoisehell has spent the winter hidden away in a house or shed, but it has now woken up with the rising temperature. The first thing it needs is some food to get going. This one was sitting on a cultivated willow that is currently covered in pollen-laden catkins, but they do provide a small amount of nectar too which is what the butterfly needs. Willows are a great source of food for our pollinators early in the spring so well worth planting one in your garden.
