This gathering of snail remains has been left by a bird called a thrush.

The bird finds a convenient stone – called an anvil. When they find a snail, they will head to their nearest “anvil”, wallop it a few times against the stone and get the tasty morsel inside.

    1. Good question Jane – and I don’t know the answer. If it was a good one perhaps all the thrushes in the neighbourhood would use it. I’ll see if I can find an answer!
