Bee numbers are declining world wide. Here in Ireland, a number of our bumblebee species are threatened and more than half have suffered substantial declines in numbers since the 1980s. Reasons for the declines include loss of habitat and habitat fragmentation, loss of flower-rich habitat, pest and diseases, use of pesticides and climate change.
In Ireland, we now have an All Ireland Pollinator Plan which hopes to address some of these issues. We all can do our bit by not using chemicals in our gardens and planting more flowers.
